A Bit of History
To this point we have learned that there was rebellion in heaven and Lucifer and his host were cast out.
We also know that the Godhead held a council in which it was decided that the Son of God would create the earth. He would take full responsibility for the entrance of sin on the earth. The Son would go down to the earth at the appointed time and live a life of example to the human race.
There had to be common agreement between the members of the Godhead. The Son of God would not have arbitrarily made a unilateral decision to go to the earth and sacrifice Himself, without discussion on this matter so vital to the destiny of the sinners on this planet.
A person who loves His family so strongly would never do anything that would affect all of them without total corroboration, or consent.
In human form, the Son of God would also attempt to reinforce the will of God in the hearts of the people. In the process of time religion had become merely a ritual without any of the vitality. It had not a trace of the true meaning of the coming Messiah in it.
The Jews had been chosen by God as His people for a purpose. Most people have no idea why the Jews were chosen. The reason goes back many centuries to about the year 1898 BC.
Prior to this time the world was full of rebellious and profligate people. The people did not know nor fear God. They were true worldlings in every respect. It was at this time that God decided that he would destroy Sodom and Gomorrah.
This should have gotten the attention of the rest of the population. They should have realized that the Creator God has full control and allows rebellion and licentiousness to go only so far. God hates sin and it cannot coexist with Him. That is why Lucifer and his folowers were ejected from heaven.
It was then that God decided that He would raise up a people who would be His witnesses. He knew that genetics have a major effect on the basic character with which a child is born.
The second commandment clearly points this out. The second commandment forbids idol worship. In Exodus 20:5, (2nd part) it reads:
“I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;”
By “a jealous God,” He is saying that He who created all things and provides all your necessities will not tolerate mixed allegiance. He goes on to say that the character traits of the parents will be passed on to future generations.
The devil and his cohorts knowing human nature, which after all is fashioned after their own natures, played upon the fleshly desires of the population. They devised every kind of wicked activity that would appeal to the carnal (sinful) heart.
Sin was rampant on the earth
“and God saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that the imagination of the thoughts of the heart was only evil continually.” Gen. 6:5.
God was sorry that he had created man on the earth. You can read that in verses 6 and 7. Go back now in Gen. 6 and read vs. 1 and 2.
“And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters wre born unto them, That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.”
In these two verses lies a common misunderstanding. By the sons of God is meant those who worshipped the Creator God and lived faithful to His precepts. The sons of men refers to those who did not believe in the true God and were in rebellion against Him.
So, here is the situation. The sons of God saw the attractive daughters of the heathens and against God’s wishes, they let their carnal desires overrule the counsel they had received not to mingle with unbelievers. We will see more about this kind of behavior in the people of God later on.
In verse 3 we find another area of misunderstanding. Let’s read it.
“And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.”
Many take this to mean that God decided that man shall from that point on live for 120 years. What the verse is really saying is that God had decided to destroy man from the face of the earth, but He would give them a period of 120 years in which to repent and give up their evil ways. If man had repented and followed God’s will, there would have been no world-wide flood.
Verse 7 tells us that God said “I will destroy man whom I have created…for it repenteth me that I have made them.” (Verse 8) “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord.”
Amidst all the wickedness, Noah remained righteous before God. God decided to use him to warn the people of a coming flood. Noah was instructed to build an ark, according to plans that God gave him.
The ark was to be approximately 450 feet long, and about 75 feet wide, and it would be around 45 feet in height. The materials and instructions you can read in verses 15 and 16 of Genesis chapter 6.
God revealed his plan to Abraham. Now Abraham’s nephew Lot and Lot’s family resided in Sodom. So, Abraham, who was highly favored in heaven, pleaded with God for the city.
There is a very interesting dialogue between Abraham and God. You will find that account in Genesis, chapter 18. Chapter 19, describes the destruction of the cities..
